Description
The Motor Grader Operator (MoGO) Training is a one- or two-day program led by experienced operators who share proven techniques for safe and efficient motor grader operation.
Classroom Session
The classroom portion includes instructor-led presentations and discussion focused on practical blading techniques for a variety of maintenance tasks. Topics include roadway and roadside cross-section elements, safety considerations, and equipment operation.
Participants typically represent multiple cities and counties, creating a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, and learn different approaches to roadway maintenance.
Optional Field Session
Newer operators who attend the classroom session in 2026 will have the opportunity to participate in an optional one-on-one field training session with an instructor during the week of July 27-30.
This hands-on training will take place on closed gravel roads at the Iowa Army National Guard Base (Camp Dodge) in Johnston.
Participants will practice key grader operations, including:

Moldboard pitch and blade angle

Articulation and machine control

Establishing and maintaining roadway crown

Shoulder maintenance techniques

Aggressive blading techniques

Pre-trip inspections and safety checks
Additional details will be shared with all cities and counties that register participants. Please note that this is a one-day field training, and participants will be assigned a specific day during the scheduled week.
Who should attend?
This training is designed for motor grader operators and their supervisors.
New operators will gain valuable foundational skills, while experienced operators often find the course to be a useful refresher. Supervisors also benefit by learning about current techniques, safety practices, and equipment capabilities.
Participants should have a basic familiarity with equipment operation prior to attending.
Instructors
Each MoGO program is taught by a team of two highly experienced motor grader operators. Instructors bring extensive on-the-job knowledge and focus on practical, real-world techniques. During the classroom portion, they encourage questions, facilitate group discussion, and share insights gained from years of operating experience.
