Description

To reach the national goal of zero fatalities, transportation officials cannot wait for something to happen before taking action. Maintenance and construction workers who are on the road daily provide a great asset to help identify potential safety issues. This session will focus on maintenance safety solutions construction and maintenance personnel can implement on a daily basis. It will focus on safety issues related to signs and supports, vegetation control and drainage features, using the FHWA documents: Vegetation Control for Safety, A Guide for Local Highway and Street Maintenance Personnel, Maintenance of Drainage Features for Safety, A Guide for Local Street and Highway Maintenance Personnel and Maintenance of Signs and Sign Supports: A Guide for Local Roads Maintenance Personnel as the basis.

Goal

Upon successful completion of this module, participants will be able to identify maintenance safety solutions construction and maintenance personnel can implement on a daily basis related to signs and supports, vegetation control and drainage features.

Participants should be able to do the following at the end of the webinar:
  • Define your role in helping to improve safety on roads
  • Recognize maintenance tasks related to vegetation; signs and supports and drainage that impact safety
  • Identify potential safety issues on the road
  • List potential maintenance activities to address safety issues
