Iowa LTAP is a resource that is ready to help, providing biweekly updates on webinars and other online opportunities and resources that we hope will be of value to local agencies wherever they may be. All webinars are listed in Central Time.

  • Overview of Iowa DOT Access Management Manual (2023), Thursday, 3/21 at 12:00 PM – This webinar includes an overview of what the Access Management Manual includes, uses, and its purpose. The presentation will cover the key topics and takeaways from each chapter of the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT’s) Access Management Manual and demonstrate ways to utilize it. This presentation will also briefly go over the development of the manual and its purpose. For more information and to register please go here.
  • Basic Construction Inspection Webinar Series (Six One-Hour Sessions), Tuesdays–Thursdays, 4/16–4/18 and 4/23–4/25 at 12:00 – This webinar series covers roadway-related construction inspection. It will consist of six sessions that focus on an overview of various subjects. These subjects include a construction inspection overview, introduction to specifications, plan reading and documentation, communication and roles/responsibilities on the construction site, safety on the construction site, and basics of construction survey. You can attend as many of the sessions as you would like, but registration is required to attend any. More details about the sessions and registration can be found here.

  • Excavation Safety Workshops, Tuesday 4/23 (Storm Lake); Wednesday, 4/24 (Webster City); Thursday, 4/25 (Independence); Tuesday 4/30 (Atlantic); Wednesday, 5/1 (Indianola); and Thursday, 5/2 (Fairfield) – The workshop explains the hazards of excavation and trenching, how accidents happen, and how worker protective measures should be applied. It’s a great way to inform new employees of safety protocol or to update more experienced employees on new safety information. The workshop covers: critical definitions and context for excavation safety; soils analysis: testing soils and handling testing equipment; and shoring options: a walk-through of all the basic systems – sloping, shoring, and shielding.   • Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges – Two-Week Workshop, Mondays–Fridays, 4/29–5/3 and 5/6–5/10 (Ames) – A detailed description of this course is on the National Highway Institute website (www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov). This course was updated in 2022 and is based on the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Bridge Inspector’s Reference Manual (BIRM – 2022 Version), National Bridge Inspection Standards (2022 NBIS), and the FHWA Specifications for the National Bridge Inventory (SNBI). There is a required pre-requisite to attend this course. Registration for this course was limited to Iowa residents for the month of January. There are still spaces available.   • Accessible Sidewalks and Curb Ramps: Design to Installation, Tuesday, 4/30 (Ames) – This workshop will benefit state and local professionals who plan, design, inspect, and construct Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-related facilities within the public right-of-way. State and local agency staff, consultants, and contractors are encouraged to attend. NOTE: This workshop will not cover changes that have recently occurred to the national Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) until any alterations that may be needed are approved for publishing within the Iowa Statewide Urban Design and Specification (SUDAS) and/or the Iowa DOT Design Manual. Iowa Work Zone Safety Workshops, Thursday, 3/21 (Ankeny); Tuesday, 3/26 (Council Bluffs); and Thursday, 3/28 (Ankeny) – Work zone traffic control and safety training will be offered at these remaining Iowa venues so that workers across the state can participate conveniently. The workshops consist of a general session for all participants, plus breakout sessions tailored to specific categories of work zone activities: city, county, utility, Iowa DOT construction and contractors, and Iowa DOT maintenance. Iowa Build a Better Mousetrap Competition – Applications Being Accepted! Each year, Iowa LTAP sponsors a statewide Build a Better Mousetrap (BABM) Competition. It is the people on the front lines who often discover the latest and best practices, whether through new gadgets that improve the quality and safety of a project or innovative processes that reduce costs and improves efficiency. Iowa’s BABM Competition provides a great opportunity to share your new ideas with others! We are looking for submissions from Iowa’s local public agencies (e.g., cities and counties) that have created different solutions to problems or found better ways of doing things. The top three winners are recognized statewide and are offered free workshop registrations. The application deadline is 5/10. For more information and to apply online, please go here.

  • Discretionary Grant Administration Webinar (FHWA Iowa Division/Iowa DOT), Wednesday 3/20 at 10:00 AM – The purpose of this webinar is to assist local public agencies with applying for and administering U.S. DOT/FHWA Discretionary Grants. This webinar will also touch on common mistakes and best practices the FHWA Iowa Division is seeing in the application and administration of federal discretionary grants.   • Grant Writing 101 (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach), Wednesday, 3/27 (Hiawatha) and Thursday 4/25 (Sac City). This workshop helps beginners learn how to identify funding sources, effectively project plan, and write successful grant applications.
