TSA wins best student chapter award 7 years in a row

Humans are broadly drawn to the number 7, sometimes labeled “the number of perfection.” If 7 is indeed the number of perfection, then the Transportation Student Association (TSA) at Iowa State University has got perfection figured out.

For 7 years running, Iowa State’s TSA has come away with the 1st place Outstanding Student Chapter Award of the Missouri Valley Section Institute of Transportation Engineers (MOVITE) that covers the states of Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

MOVITE aims through its awards and scholarships to “recognize excellence in transportation by making awards to members whose contributions and achievements benefit our profession.” Iowa State’s TSA was selected according to guidelines established by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) as MOVITE’S most outstanding student chapter on the basis of their annual report of activities, including membership involvement, regular meetings and attendance as a percentage of membership, promotion of membership activities, involvement with other ITE student chapters, and other activities promoting the mission and/or values of ITE and MOVITE. TSA representatives are slated to accept a plaque along with $300 to honor the organization’s continued status as MOVITE’s most outstanding student chapter at the institute’s annual meeting June 19-21st in St. Louis.

A few notable 2018-2019 events helping Iowa State’s TSA stand out include

  • community service activities such as the fall and spring Roadside Clean-Up Events;
  • professional development opportunities such as the R Workshops led by Ashirwad Barnwal, PhD student and InTrans research assistant; and
  • multiple opportunities to learn and network with industry professionals such as Bruce Belmore, president of ITE International; Joel Wright, president and CEO of Mobotrex; and Chase Cutler and Tyler Wiles, traffic engineering specialists from HR Green.

In the words of Jing Dong, associate professor of civil engineering and TSA student chapter faculty adviser, the fact that Iowa State’s TSA officers and students have won MOVITE’s 1st place Outstanding Student Chapter Award 7 times in a row shows “the rich educational experience we provide at InTrans for future transportation professionals.”
