Web-Based Training Opportunities
Several transportation organizations have web-based training courses available, many of which may be free of charge. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has a variety of National Highway Institute (NHI) online courses, and it also has partnered with the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) to offer free courses to public employees in smaller jurisdictions and also with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) to provide free courses through Technical Training Solutions (TTS).
LTAP staff members are happy to provide additional information on the offerings, or hear from users on what courses they’re interested in taking. Contact Keith Knapp at kknapp@iastate.edu with questions or to offer any feedback. Courses may also be eligible for Road Scholar credits; contact Keith Knapp if interested in learning whether the courses are eligible.
Details about the offerings and how to access them are below.
Web-based trainings are self-paced and accessible after users create accounts for both Login.gov and Blackboard. More than 300 trainings are available, many of which are web-based training (WBT).
To take advantage of the courses, users can create an account at the link below and use their government email when accessing the NHI course offerings. NHI is currently going through many changes; however, in the past many WBT courses were available free of charge.

The partnership between the Institute of Transportation Engineers and Federal Highway Administration offers free training opportunities to employees in counties with populations fewer than 100,000, cities or towns of fewer than 50,000, and all tribal governments.
Employees should confirm their eligibility by contacting Kellyanne Broom, ITE professional development manager, at pdinfo@ite.org, and then they will be able to access the courses through ITE’s Learning Hub.

The TTS courses allow users to build up a library of courses and start and stop them based on their schedules. Hundreds of training modules are available at the TTS website and on its mobile application (app).
The free courses are only available to local agencies. To take advantage of the courses, users should visit the link below, select their course(s), and enter their government email address and promotional code D5X3-B3D9-52CB-4XCX to access the offerings. Note: If the promotional code doesn’t work with a particular course, it is not included in the “free for local agencies” program.
